When to Fish Bluegill

Spring Spawn (April - June)

Spring is the best time to target bluegill. As water warms into the 70s, bluegill move shallow to spawn on sandy or gravelly flats. Males fan out circular beds and aggressively guard them. This is when Keith puts families on the fastest action of the year with fish biting almost continuously.

Prime time - beds can hold dozens of fish!

Summer (June - August)

Summer bluegill fishing remains excellent, especially during morning and evening hours. Fish move to slightly deeper water around docks, weed edges, and brush during the heat of the day. Multiple spawning cycles throughout summer mean fresh waves of bedding fish become available.

Early morning trips beat the heat

Fall (September - November)

Fall bluegill feed heavily to prepare for winter. Fish school up around structure and can be found in good numbers around brush piles and dock posts. While not as predictable as spring, fall offers good opportunities for anglers who know where to look.

Schooling fish provide fast action

Winter (December - February)

Winter slows bluegill activity significantly. Fish hold in deeper water and become less aggressive. While dedicated anglers can still catch bluegill with very slow presentations, winter is better spent targeting bass, trout, or crappie on these lakes.

Techniques & Tackle

How Keith Catches Bluegill

🦇

Live Bait

Worms, crickets, and wax worms are bluegill favorites. Simple and effective, live bait is perfect for beginners and guarantees bites on every trip.

🎣

Small Jigs

Tiny jigs in 1/32 to 1/64 oz tipped with soft plastics or live bait. A step up in technique that still produces consistent catches for all skill levels.

Bobber Fishing

A classic bobber and hook setup is the most visual and exciting way to catch bluegill. Kids love watching the bobber disappear when a fish bites.

Why Bluegill Trips Are Ideal for Kids

Constant Bites

Bluegill are aggressive feeders that rarely refuse a well-presented bait. Kids can expect bites within seconds of dropping their line, keeping them engaged and excited throughout the trip. There's no waiting around wondering if fish are present.

Perfect Size

Bluegill are the ideal size for young anglers. Big enough to put a bend in a light rod and provide a fun fight, but small enough for little hands to handle safely. The perfect confidence builder for future fishing adventures.

Simple Techniques

Bluegill don't require complicated presentations or expensive equipment. A simple hook, bobber, and worm is all it takes. Kids can master the technique quickly and feel accomplished catching fish on their own.

Beautiful Fish

Bluegill are among the most colorful freshwater fish, especially during spawn when males display vibrant orange and blue coloration. Kids love seeing the beautiful colors and comparing their catches throughout the day.
