When to Fish Crappie

Spring Spawn (March - May)

Spring is the most productive time for crappie fishing. As water temperatures reach the mid-50s to 60s, crappie move shallow to spawn around brush piles, stake beds, and boat docks. This is when Keith puts clients on the best numbers of the year with fish stacked in predictable locations.

Best time of year - book early!

Early Summer (June - July)

Post-spawn crappie remain catchable as they recover in slightly deeper water. Fish move to brush piles in 8-15 feet of water and feed actively in the morning and evening. Keith uses spider rigging techniques to cover multiple brush piles and locate schools of hungry crappie.

Good numbers continue

Late Summer & Fall (August - November)

As summer progresses, crappie move to deeper structure and become more scattered. Fall brings a secondary feeding push as fish bulk up for winter. While not as predictable as spring, dedicated crappie anglers can still find good action around deep brush piles and channel edges.

Deeper presentations required

Winter (December - February)

Winter crappie hold in deep water around brush piles and standing timber in 20-30 feet. Slow presentations with small jigs and minnows are the ticket. While not peak season, winter crappie are often larger as the smaller fish become less active in cold water.

How Keith Catches Crappie

🎣

Jigs

Small tube jigs and hair jigs in 1/16 to 1/8 oz sizes are crappie candy. Worked slowly through brush piles and along stake beds for consistent bites.

🦇

Minnows

Live minnows are deadly on crappie, especially for beginners and kids. Fished under a bobber or on a jig head for irresistible appeal.

🌳

Brush Pile Fishing

Keith knows the location of productive brush piles throughout both lakes. Vertical presentations dropped into brush concentrate crappie for fast action.

Perfect for Families

Why Crappie Trips Are Great for Kids

Non-Stop Action

Crappie school together in large numbers, meaning once you find them, everyone gets to catch fish. Kids love the constant action of pulling crappie after crappie from a productive brush pile. It keeps young anglers engaged and excited about fishing.

Easy to Catch

Crappie don't require complicated techniques or expensive tackle. A simple bobber and minnow setup is highly effective and easy for kids to master. The soft bite is forgiving, and the fight is perfect for small hands to handle.

Delicious to Eat

Crappie are among the best-tasting freshwater fish. There's nothing like a fish fry with crappie your family caught together. Keith can clean your catch at the end of the trip so you can enjoy fresh crappie fillets that evening.

Lifelong Memories

A crappie trip with Keith creates memories that last a lifetime. Watching your child's face light up when they catch their first fish is priceless. These trips often become annual family traditions.
