When to Fish Smallmouth Bass

Early Spring (March - April)

Early spring is prime time for Table Rock smallmouth. As water temperatures climb into the 50s, smallmouth become aggressive feeders before their spawn. Keith targets transitional areas where fish move from deep winter haunts toward spawning flats, using jerkbaits and tubes along gravel points and rocky transitions.

Best months: Mid-March through April

Pre-Spawn & Spawn (April - May)

Smallmouth spawn earlier than largemouth, moving onto gravel flats and rocky banks when water hits 58-65 degrees. These fish are extremely aggressive defenders of their beds. Keith uses finesse presentations like drop shot rigs and small tubes to target bedding fish in the clear Table Rock waters.

Sight fishing opportunities available

Summer Deep Water (June - August)

Summer pushes smallmouth to deeper, cooler water around main lake bluffs and humps. Fish hold in 20-40 feet of water along rocky structure. While not the peak season, dedicated anglers can still catch quality smallmouth using drop shot rigs and deep diving crankbaits worked slowly along bluff walls.

Focus on early morning and evening

Late Fall (October - November)

Late fall rivals early spring as the best time to target Table Rock smallmouth. Cooling water triggers aggressive feeding as fish bulk up for winter. Smallmouth push onto rocky points and gravel banks, chasing shad and crawfish. Jerkbaits fished around bluffs produce some of the year's biggest fish.

Where to Find Smallmouth

Rocky Bluffs

Table Rock Lake's iconic bluff walls provide ideal smallmouth habitat. The steep rocky faces offer shade, depth transitions, and ambush points. Keith works these areas with vertical presentations in summer and jerkbaits during cooler months.

Gravel Points

Gravel points are smallmouth magnets, especially during spring and fall. These areas warm quickly in spring, attracting baitfish and crawfish that smallmouth feed on. Look for points with gradual tapers and mixed rock and gravel composition.
