Kids and a Guided Boat Are a Great Combination
A Branson vacation with kids fills up fast. Shows, Silver Dollar City, go karts, mini golf. Throw a morning on the water into that mix and you create the memory the kids talk about for years. I have guided hundreds of families over twenty years and I know exactly how to run a trip that keeps small hands busy, safe, and catching fish.
Here is what you need to know about a family fishing trip in Branson so you can decide if it fits your vacation.
What Makes a Family Trip Different
Kid trips are not bass tournaments. My job is to keep lines in the water and fish on the hook. That usually means we target crappie and bluegill or rainbow trout on Lake Taneycomo. Both produce fast action and fish kids can actually reel in without help.
I keep trips shorter for younger kids. A three to four hour morning is usually the sweet spot. Any longer and attention fades. A full day with kids under ten is not usually the right call.
The pace is slower. We stop often. We take breaks. We eat snacks. We take pictures of every fish no matter how small.
Best Ages for a Guided Fishing Trip
I have had kids as young as four have a great morning on the water. That is not the norm and it depends on the kid. Five and up is typically comfortable. Seven through twelve is a sweet spot age where they can cast, reel, and handle small fish themselves.
Teenagers who show interest in fishing absolutely love these trips. They get to use quality gear, learn real techniques, and come home with photos to show their friends.
Which Lake for Kids
For most families I recommend Lake Taneycomo. Cold tailwater from Table Rock Dam keeps rainbow trout biting steady. Kids catch a lot of fish fast. The water is usually calmer than Table Rock and there is less run time between spots.
For families with older kids who want bass, a Table Rock Lake crappie and bluegill trip around brush in shallow water works well. Sunfish bite constantly and the fights are perfect for small anglers.
Safety on the Boat
Kids wear life jackets the entire trip. I carry a full range of sizes on board. The boat is stable and comfortable. I move slowly when kids are on board and I keep speeds gentle during runs between spots.
I am USCG licensed and commercially insured. Parents can relax and focus on helping their kids enjoy the trip instead of worrying about the boat. More on that on our Coast Guard license page.
What Keith Provides and What You Bring
I bring every rod, reel, hook, and bait the trip needs. I have kid sized setups matched for small hands and light fish.
You bring sunscreen, hats, sunglasses, snacks, and drinks. A change of clothes for kids is not a bad idea since they get wet handling fish. Bring a camera or phone. Full list on our what to bring page.

Families staying at Bar M Resort or Shore Acres Resort can often get dock pickups so kids do not have to load up for another car ride.
Frequently Asked Questions
How young can a kid be on a guided trip?
I have had four year olds have a great morning. Five and up is typically the comfortable floor. Call me and tell me the ages so I can tailor the trip.
Do kids need a fishing license in Missouri?
Missouri residents and non residents under fifteen years old do not need a license. Always confirm current regulations on the Missouri Department of Conservation website before the trip.
How long should a family trip be?
Three to four hours is the sweet spot for families with young kids. Families with teenagers can handle a full half day or longer.
Can we take home the fish we catch?
Yes, within Missouri limits. Rainbow trout from Taneycomo are excellent eating and most families take a few home.
