You Are Going to Be Fine
Most people who call me for a first Branson fishing trip are a little nervous. They do not want to embarrass themselves in front of a guide. They do not want to spend money and not catch anything. They do not know what to wear. I hear the same questions every spring. Here is the honest, friendly version of the answers so you can show up relaxed and ready to have fun.
A guided trip is the easiest way to fish Branson the first time. You do not need experience, your own gear, or any knowledge about Table Rock Lake or Lake Taneycomo. You just need to show up.
Pick the Right Trip for Your First Time
If you have never fished before, a morning trip on Lake Taneycomo for rainbow trout is usually the best first experience. The water is calm, the trout bite hard, and you will catch fish in the first few minutes. It is a confidence builder and a lot of fun.
If you have fished a little and want to chase bass, a half day on Table Rock Lake in spring or fall is a great starting point. Keith will put you on fish and teach you the technique as you go.
A full day is not the right first move for most visitors. Start with a half day. If you love it you can book another half day later in the week. See all the options on our trips page.
What to Wear
Dress in layers. Early mornings on the water are cold even in June. Bring a light jacket you can peel off. Wear sunglasses and a hat. Closed toe shoes like sneakers work better than flip flops.
Full packing list is on our what to bring page. The short version is a Missouri fishing license, a hat, sunglasses, sunscreen, and snacks.
What Happens When You Book
You call (417) 693-0298 or send a message through the contact page. Tell Keith your dates, how many people, and what you are hoping to catch. He will tell you which lake is fishing best and recommend a start time.
A $75 refundable deposit holds your date. The balance is due on the day of the trip. Cash or Venmo both work.
The night before, Keith will text you the meeting location and time. If the weather looks bad he will call a day ahead so you do not waste a drive.
What a Typical Morning Looks Like
You meet Keith at a ramp or, if you are staying at Bar M Resort or Shore Acres Resort, at your dock. He has the boat loaded and ready. A short run to the first fishing spot takes less than ten minutes.
You fish for about four hours. Keith moves between three or four spots based on what the fish are doing. He baits hooks, ties knots, nets fish, and takes pictures. Your only job is to follow his instructions and enjoy it.
You will catch fish. That is the goal. You may also learn something about Table Rock Lake or Lake Taneycomo that surprises you. Keith has twenty years of observation packed into every story.
Honest Expectations
Fishing is fishing. Some mornings are red hot and some are slower. Keith will work hard all trip to put you on fish no matter the conditions. Over twenty years he has built the kind of local knowledge that keeps productive mornings happening even on tough days.
You do not need to impress anybody. If you have never held a fishing rod, say so. If you have never taken a hook out of a fish, say so. Keith teaches beginners every single week. This is the friendliest introduction to fishing you will find in southwest Missouri.
