People call me every week asking the same question. When should I come fish Table Rock Lake. The honest answer depends on what you want to catch and what kind of weather you can stand. I have guided this lake for over twenty years and every month has something going for it. Below is a plain English breakdown of what happens on Table Rock Lake across the calendar year so you can plan a trip that matches the fishing you actually want.

January and February: Trophy Bass Window

Cold, quiet, and underrated. Water temps sit in the low to mid 40s. Largemouth and smallmouth both hold deep on bluff ends and channel swings. You will not catch a pile of fish, but the ones that bite tend to be heavy. Suspending jerkbaits worked on long pauses win more days than anything else. Jigs dragged slow on steep rock finish second. You need a warm coat and patience, but the trophy bass potential is higher right now than in any other stretch of the year.

March: Pre Spawn Transition

Water starts creeping from the mid 40s into the low 50s. Bass move from deep winter homes up onto secondary points and main lake pockets. This is the month when a warm afternoon can trigger some of the best fishing of the year. Jerkbaits still carry the day early. Once water crosses 50 I start mixing in a swimbait or a chatterbait on shallow flats. Crappie begin staging in the mouths of brushy creek arms. It is a great time to fish Table Rock Lake if you want active fish and fewer boats on the water.

April: The Spawn

My favorite month. Largemouth and smallmouth move shallow to spawn when water hits the low 60s. Kentucky spotted bass spawn a little later and stay on points. Soft plastics, wacky worms, and small jigs around chunk rock bank all produce. Topwater starts working toward the end of the month on calm mornings. Crappie are shallow and aggressive. If you are picking one week of the year to fly in for a trip, the last week of April into the first week of May is my pick. Read more in our Kentucky bass guide.

May: Post Spawn Recovery

Bass finish spawning and drift back toward deeper water. The first two weeks of May can be the strongest topwater window of the year. Buzzbaits and walking baits over secondary points at first light produce big numbers. Bluegill start bedding which brings smaller crappie and bass into ambush range. This is a great month for families who want fast action without dealing with summer heat.

June, July, and August: Summer Patterns

Hot, humid, and still very good if you are on the water at dawn. I start summer trips before sunup. Topwater over main lake points produces for the first hour. After the sun gets up we move to deep brush piles and bluff ends in 20 to 30 feet of water. Drop shots, shaky heads, and deep crankbaits all get bit. Kentucky bass stack on offshore structure and can be caught in numbers. Afternoons slow down for bass but crappie stay reliable on brush. For specifics, see our summer fishing guide.

September and October: Fall Shad Migration

The second peak of the year. Shad pour into the backs of creeks and bass follow in feeding packs. Topwater fishing gets wild. A Zara Spook or a popper worked over a flat ridge at first light will get absolutely crushed by groups of schooling bass. Water cools from the upper 70s into the mid 60s across these two months. If you want violent surface strikes and the best shot at a fifty fish day, book in October.

November and December: Kentucky Bass Prime Time

Kentucky spotted bass stack up on main lake points and ledges. This is when we catch the most fish per trip all year. A spoon vertical jigged on a school of suspended spots will produce one after another. Smallmouth get aggressive in cold water too. Lake traffic drops off to almost nothing. It is some of the best fishing of the year and almost nobody is out here.

Lake Taneycomo: A Year Round Alternative

If you come in the worst summer heat or a bitter cold snap, Lake Taneycomo stays productive. Cold water released from Table Rock Dam keeps rainbow and brown trout feeding year round. When bass fishing is tough, I switch customers to trout and we still have a great morning.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the single best month to fish Table Rock Lake?

Late April into early May. Water is in the 60s, bass are spawning or just finishing, and fish feed aggressively between cold fronts.

Is summer a bad time to fish Table Rock Lake?

Not at all. Start early. Topwater at dawn and deep structure by mid morning both produce. Afternoon heat is the only slow window.

Can you catch bass in winter?

Yes. Winter is trophy season. Fewer fish, bigger averages. Suspending jerkbaits and slow jigs on bluffs produce when you are patient.

When do crappie move shallow?

Crappie stage in late March and move shallow to brush and timber through April and early May as water crosses into the mid 60s.
