Tournament Prep Is Not Fun Fishing
If you are fishing a tournament on Table Rock Lake, your practice days need to produce answers, not fish photos. I have been a Table Rock guide for over twenty years and I run dedicated tournament preparation trips for competitive anglers. The goal of a prep trip is to hand you a pattern, a set of locations, and a confident plan for tournament morning.
This is not a sightseeing trip. It is targeted work. If you are a tournament angler coming from out of state for a BASS Open, an FLW event, or a local derby, here is how we can compress weeks of scouting into a productive day on the water.
What a Tournament Prep Trip Looks Like
Before the trip I ask about the tournament dates, the event rules, and the species targeted. I look at the expected lake conditions for that week and I pre plan a route through productive water in advance.
On the water we cover water efficiently. We do not set the hook on every fish we see. We pattern fish. We find the depth, the cover type, the baitfish orientation, and the primary structure that is producing. Then we hit two or three backup areas to confirm the pattern.
I share my screen. You see the electronics. You ride through the pattern with me. By the end of the day you have a set of water you understand and can fish independently on tournament day without giving away my personal honey holes.
What I Hold Back
Specific waypoints and brush piles I have planted. Those stay on my boat. That is how Keith stays in business.
Private fishing spots that have taken years to develop.
Any information that would compromise a guided customer's experience on my water.
Everything else, pattern, depth, cover type, bait orientation, I share in full.
What I Give You
A confirmed primary pattern for the week of the tournament based on real time conditions.
A proven milk run of three to five areas that fit that pattern.
Bait choices, retrieve speeds, and rigging that I know are producing right now.
Honest feedback on your technique if you want it. Some tournament anglers do not, and that is fine too.
A cheat sheet of main lake features and general depth ranges you can reference during practice days on your own.
Seasonal Tournament Windows on Table Rock
Spring (April to May): Spawn and post spawn. Shallow to mid depth bass. Soft plastics, topwater, swimbaits. Read our seasonal guide.
Summer (June to August): Deep structure. Drop shot, jigging spoon, big crankbait. Early morning topwater bonus fish.
Fall (September to November): Shad migration. Topwater and swim jigs. See our Kentucky bass guide.
Winter (December to March): Deep suspended fish. Jerkbait and spoon. Trophy window.
Boat and Electronics
I run a modern Nitro bass boat with a full electronics package. Side imaging, down imaging, live sonar. If you are fishing a tournament and have not used live sonar yet, this is your chance to see how it changes deep offshore fishing.
I run Bass Pro Shops, Nitro, and Lew's gear on every trip. Everything on the boat is tournament quality.
Booking Tournament Prep Days
Tournament prep days fill up quickly around major events on Table Rock. Book as soon as you know your event dates. A standard full day trip covers most prep needs. Back to back prep days are an option for larger events.
Call (417) 693-0298 or use the contact page. Mention the tournament name and your species targets so I can plan the day around the event.
Frequently Asked Questions
Will Keith give away his personal spots?
No. Specific waypoints and personal brush piles stay private. Patterns, depths, cover types, and bait choices are shared in full.
Can I bring my own tackle on a prep day?
Yes, absolutely. Tournament anglers often want to practice with their own setups. Keith will still put you on the right water.
How far in advance should I book a prep trip?
Tournament weekends fill fast. Book as soon as your event is on the calendar, typically four to eight weeks ahead.
Can Keith fish the tournament with me?
No. Most tournaments prohibit hired guides during competition days. The prep day is for practice only.
