The Season Nobody Fishes Is the Best One for Trophies
Most people hang up the rods in November and do not pick them up until April. They are missing the best trophy fishing of the year. Winter on Table Rock Lake and Lake Taneycomo produces big fish because the population has thinned out, the fish that are actively feeding are the better ones, and the lake pressure is basically zero.
I fish all winter. I guide all winter. Here is what makes cold water fishing in the Ozarks so productive if you can handle a chilly morning.
Dress Right First
Winter on the water is colder than winter on land. The wind off the lake cuts through normal winter clothing. Layer properly.
Base layer: wool or synthetic long johns. No cotton.
Mid layer: fleece pants and fleece pullover.
Outer layer: insulated, wind resistant bibs and jacket. A fishing specific winter suit is worth every dollar for people who fish cold water regularly.
Hands: insulated waterproof gloves. A spare pair in a dry bag matters. Your hands will get wet handling fish.
Head: a warm beanie or a hooded pullover.
Footwear: insulated boots with wool socks. Feet are the first thing to get cold on a boat.
Winter Bass on Table Rock Lake
Water temperatures in the 40s push bass deep. They school on bluff ends, channel swings, and offshore humps in 30 to 60 feet of water. They do not move much and they do not chase. Presentation is everything.
Suspending jerkbaits: The winter king on Table Rock. Cast a Rogue or a Lucky Craft Pointer, reel it down, and pause it. Long pauses. Fifteen seconds between twitches. A good winter jerkbait rod and reel setup can make or break a day.
Jigging spoons: Drop a three quarter ounce silver spoon straight down on a school of fish marked on electronics. Snap it up a foot or two, let it fall on semi slack line, repeat.
Football jigs: Drag a brown or green pumpkin jig on steep rock banks. Slow is the speed. Wait for the bite to load up.

Winter Trout on Lake Taneycomo
This is where winter fishing in the Ozarks really shines. Taneycomo water stays in the upper 40s year round. Brown trout get aggressive in cold air and short days. The big ones feed in a way they do not the rest of the year.
Large jerkbaits, big minnows on light line, and slow streamer flies all produce trophy browns. Early and late in the day are best. Rainbow trout stay active all winter and catching fifty fish mornings are common. Read our Taneycomo trout guide for the full breakdown.
Fishing the Weather Windows
Cold is fine. Bluebird high pressure after a front is tough on bass but still good for trout. Cloudy days and light winds are the sweet spot. A 40 degree cloudy day with a south wind can produce the best bite of the winter.
Watch for the warming trend after a cold front. The second and third day of a warm up often puts bass in a feeding mood as water creeps up a couple degrees.
What Keith Provides in Winter
Warm boat ride. Hand warmers. Hot coffee. Every rod, reel, and lure tuned for cold water presentations. All you bring is warm clothing and a license.
I run fewer trips in winter so availability is usually better. Weekday mornings are often wide open. Call (417) 693-0298 or use the contact page.
Is Winter Right for You?
If you have never fished cold water, try one trip. You will learn more in a winter morning about bass behavior than in three summer trips. The fish are slow but the patterns are locked in tight. Every cast matters.
If you want numbers and easy weather, book spring or fall. Read our seasonal guide to pick the right window for your goals.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is it safe to fish in winter?
Yes, with the right clothing and a warm boat. Keith monitors weather and cancels days that are truly unsafe. Deposits roll to a new date at no charge.
What is the warmest time of day in winter?
Mid morning through mid afternoon. Start around 8 AM and fish until 2 PM is a comfortable window most winter days.
Are winter trips cheaper?
Winter is a great time to book because availability is wide open. Pricing is the same year round. You are paying for Keith's time, gear, and knowledge.
Can beginners fish in winter?
Not my first recommendation. Cold weather plus learning basics can be frustrating. I would start beginners in spring, summer, or fall.
