Water Conditions
March has been the classic Ozarks month, cold starts and warm afternoons. Table Rock Lake surface temperature ran from the mid 40s at the start of the month up to the mid 50s by the last week. Lake level is near full pool after a wet late winter. Water clarity is good on main lake water, a little stained in creek arms after rain events.
Lake Taneycomo has been running variable generation. Cold water, good clarity, classic trout river conditions.
What Is Biting
Largemouth and Kentucky bass are in full pre spawn mode. Fish are staging on secondary points and the first major cover moving into spawning pockets. When water crossed 50 degrees around the middle of the month the bite really turned on.
Smallmouth have been the best producer on numbers. Rocky main lake banks and bluff ends in eight to twenty feet of water are stacked with fish.
Crappie are starting to move up. Most fish are still in eighteen to twenty five foot brush but the shallow move is coming.
Taneycomo trout fishing has been excellent all month. Drift fishing small jigs and fishing PowerBait on the bottom are both producing consistent numbers.
Techniques and Lures
The jerkbait bite has been the story of March. A Rogue or Lucky Craft Pointer worked slow with long pauses on rocky main lake banks is producing quality fish. Cold water means fifteen to twenty second pauses, not the short twitch twitch pause of summer fishing.
A half ounce football jig dragged on chunk rock banks in eight to fifteen feet is a reliable second option, especially on warmer afternoons.
For smallmouth, a three eighths ounce hair jig or a blade bait fished vertical on bluff ends has produced big numbers.
For crappie, a jig tipped with a minnow on deep brush is still the program. The shallow move will take over in April.
Taneycomo rainbows on scuds, small marabou jigs, and PowerBait on a light Carolina rig.
Hot Areas
The middle and upper sections of Table Rock Lake around Kimberling City and Long Creek have been producing the most consistent action. Rocky main lake banks with deep water nearby are holding both smallmouth and Kentucky bass.
Lake Taneycomo has fished best in the upper end below the dam on low water days. When generation kicks on, the downstream stretches below Fall Creek pick up.
I am keeping specific spots off the report. Book a trip and I will put you on them.
